Pre-purchase inspection guide
Chassis and sill rust
The S2000's open-top body means water can ingress into sills, floor pans, and structural members, with serious rust being a hidden but potentially uneconomical repair
Use a torch and mirror to inspect inside the sills, under floor mats, and around the rear of the cabin. Probe with a screwdriver at any soft or bubbled paintwork. Place the car on a ramp and inspect the underside fully.
Differential condition
The Torsen LSD is essential to the car's dynamic character and is expensive to replace or rebuild
Listen for clunking or vibration on slow tight turns under load. Engage first gear and pull away from rest — any judder or hesitation from the rear suggests LSD wear.
Engine oil condition and service history
The F20C/F22C must be maintained with regular oil changes to protect the VTEC system and high-revving valve train
Check oil on the dipstick for colour and viscosity — black, gritty oil is a red flag. Request a full service history and verify oil change intervals of no more than 8,000 km. Cold-start the engine and listen for tappet rattle.
VTEC engagement
Confirms the variable valve timing system is functioning correctly and the engine has not been modified or damaged
During a test drive, accelerate hard past 6,000 rpm — there should be a distinct, linear surge in power delivery as VTEC engages. Any hesitation, misfiring, or absence of the VTEC kick warrants further investigation.
Soft top condition
Replacement hoods are costly and a deteriorated top may indicate water ingress into the cabin
Inspect the fabric for cracking, fading, or mould. Check the rear PVC window for crazing or delamination. Operate the hood several times to confirm the latches and hinges function smoothly. Look inside the boot and cabin for water staining or damp carpets.
Gearbox feel and synchromesh
1st and 2nd gear synchromesh wear is common on driven examples and a rebuild is significant cost
Test all six gears from cold and at operating temperature. Any grinding, baulking, or reluctance to engage 1st or 2nd gear from cold indicates synchromesh wear. The shift should be precise and mechanical at all times.
Modification history
The S2000 is a popular base for modification, and poorly executed engine, suspension, or brake work can mask underlying problems or create new ones
Look for aftermarket intakes, exhausts, suspension components, engine internals, or ECU tunes. Ask for documentation on any modifications. Be especially cautious of boosted (turbocharged/supercharged) conversions without full supporting modifications.
Accident and paint history
Chassis repairs on a lightweight roadster can compromise structural integrity and handling precision
Use a paint depth gauge across all panels — inconsistencies indicate filler or repainting. Check panel gaps for uniformity. Inspect inside the engine bay and boot for signs of welding or repainting beyond the standard finish.
